National Gallery’s first American painting arrives in London with baggage

February 7, 2014

The National Gallery, London, welcomes their first major American painting into their collection.  In the early 20th century, Ohio born artist George Bellows moved to New York City to further his career.  Focusing on the hard working middle class, his art depicts the true atmosphere of life in the early 1900’s.  His work, Men of the Docks, now calls the National Gallery home.  The work was first owned by the Maier Museum of Art in Lynchburg, VA where it hung for almost 100 years until being sold for future funding.
