With good intentions at heart, a young boy ruined a historical rock carving and one of the most internationally known symbols of Norway. Located on the island of Tor, a 5,000 year old stone carving of a man skiing is the earliest known evidence of skiing dating back to the Stone Age. Due to its age, the work has become very faint; hoping to allow visitors to see the drawing more clearly, the young boy used a sharp object to scratch along the lines of not only this work but several others located on the island. The damage is irreversible and local politicians are calling it a “national tragedy.” This work in particular is so well known that it inspired the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer.
