The results from Christie’s sale of Contemporary art were mixed … somethings did very well, while other had a tough go. As always, there were some pretty serious prices paid for certain works — $29.2M for the Fontana (sold by Steven Cohen who paid $16M for it in 2012) and the $28.2 M for the 13 foot Bourgeois spider. On the flip side, while Warhol’s Four Marilyns made $36M, it had an estimate of $40-$60M (this same work sold just 2 years ago for $44M and this time around had is said to have had a guarantee in the range of $45M — that would mean the auction room took a big loss).
