‘International Pop’ at the Walker Art Center

June 29, 2015

According to Richard B. Woodward, International Pop is an exhibition that explores the International Pop Art movement which began in the 1950s and hit its stride in the 1960s.  The aim of curators, Darsie Alexander and Bartholomew Ryan, is to widen the scope and examine how and why artists from Europe, Asia and South America adapted Pop’s sassy outlook and techniques to their own historical circumstances.

Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist, Claes Oldenburg, Wayne Thiebaud, Robert Indiana, Eduardo Paolozzi, Richard Hamilton, Cildo Meirele, Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, Ushio Shinohara and Rosalyn Drexler are among the many artists whose works are included the exhibition.  In all, there are 125 works on display that date from the mid 1950s to the early 1970s.

The exhibition runs through August 29 at the Walker Art Center and then travels to the Dallas Museum of Art and Philadelphia Museum of Art through 2016.
