An “Experiment” in Hype and Cash Surplus

May 13, 2014

Last night Christie’s “experiment” was a major success, “If I Live I’ll See You Tuesday” featured 35 lots and brandished highly aggressive estimates. With works by hot contemporary artists along with blue-chip names like Warhol, Basquiat, and Koons, it is easy to understand why the salesroom was packed with big name collectors. Well sort of easy to understand… After all, we are talking about the likes of a 144 x 108 inch Damien Hirst that is made entirely of dead flies in resin… that’s a hell of a lot of bugs for one house. Perhaps Koons is more your style, and for just under $7 million you could have had a half filled fish tank that he put two basketballs in… Wait, what?!

Here is an overview of the results but check out the full article for more details…

-97% sold (34/35)

-$134.6 million (High Est. $124m)
