HSBC’s Two Canalettos Sell for $15.7 Million at Auction The Old Master sales are on in London and a pair of Canalettos (one shown below), originally purchased in 1997 for £3.9 million sold for £9.6 million ($15.7 million) on and estimate of £8 -£12 million. Total sale offered 48 works, 14 of which did not sell (leaving a 70% sell-through rate) and the total take was £33.5 million.
Included in this sale were 3 British Victorian paintings from the Leverhulme collection: a Tissot and Holman Hunt (which did not sell) and a Rossetti that made £4.5 million (est. £4-£6 million) … not sure why these were not included in a sale of British Victorian paintings???
