Jackson Pollock’s ‘One – Number 31, 1950’ Restored by MoMA

May 28, 2013

Recently, the MoMA took on the monumental task of cleaning and restoring “One: Number 31, 1950.” Jackson Pollock’s work is incredibly complex so it is no surprise that the MoMA has let this project sit on the “to-do” list since the late 90’s and even less surprising is that it took nearly a year to completely restoration. What is so fascinating about this story is what was discovered on this masterpiece of Abstract Expressionism. During this intense and painstaking process “strange” paint was found and after careful examination it was determined that the paint was applied after Pollock’s death in 1956. It is unclear who added it or why but the paint has been removed in an effort to return the work to the condition it left the studio in.
