In 1994, 7 years after the death of Andy Warhol, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts initiated work on a multi-volume catalogue raisonne of Warhol’s art. This was thought to help “contribute to the stabilization of the market for Warhol works over time, thus having a direct benefit to the Foundation’s long term goal of converting its Warhol works to cash at a favorable price.” To accomplish this, the foundation set up an authentication committee to pass judgement on the works just as many other artist-endowed foundations have done, yet none have drawn the level of controversy and distrust that the Warhol authentication board has.
Check out this incredible account of the history and actions that led to the decision to close the authentication board.
