BIOGRAPHY - Gabriel Alix (1930 - 1998)
Gabriel Alix was a Haitian artist who was born in Saint-Marc in 1930 and began studying art in 1946 at the Centre d'Art in Port-au-Prince. It was there where he was introduced to DeWitt Peters (an American artist who traveled to Haiti in 1943). Alix was one of the first-generation Haitian primitive artists and was married to Madeline Mirvil who was also an artist specializing in jungle paintings.
He was highly regarded for his innovative use of color and form and was considered a leading figure in the Haitian art world. Alix passed away in 1998.
