Prado banks on Diego Velázquez exhibition to revive fortunes – the current recession in Spain has even taken its toll on the Prado … especially with the government slashing its subsidies. As late as 2007 the museum was still in a modernization and expansion mode in order to accommodate the increasing number of visitors; then 2008 came and we all know what happened.
In an effort to increase traffic and revenue, the museum will be presenting Velázquez and the Family of Philip IV which opens on October 8 and runs through February 9. Featured will be about 30 court portraits – 14 by Velázquez and the rest by artists in his circle and some of his followers.
