Thought to be wrecked beyond repair – Piombo painting brought back to life

June 7, 2016

Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, Sebastiano del Piombo’s “Adoration of the Shepherds” has risen from the art world dust bin.  During an attempt to transfer the painting from a panel to a canvas, during the 18th century, disaster struck and the painting was all but destroyed.  After centuries, the Fitzwilliam Museum has brought it back to life (not sure we can still call it a Piombo, but…) — the before and after images are astounding.  For more of Maev Kennedy’s report, click HERE.
