Rare painting by Dutch Renaissance artist Hieronymus Bosch found in Kansas

February 5, 2016

A new painting by Hieronymus Bosch, an early Dutch Renaissance painter known for his intricate and imaginative landscapes, has been added to his small oeuvre of paintings…only 25 known to date. “The Temptation of St. Anthony” originally attributed to Bosch’s workshop was purchased from a New York gallery in the mid 30s.  Since then, it has spent much of its time in the Nelson-Atkins Museum storage until experts from the Het Noordbrabents Museum in Den Bosch (located in Bosch’s home town in the Netherlands) came across the painting in a 2003 catalog the museum published.  Experts were then dispatched to Kansas to study the work, ultimately coming to the conclusion that it is an authentic Hieronymus Bosch dating from 1500-1510.

I must add…inspecting Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights (1515) got me through a lot of boring art history lectures…..sorry Dad.
