Edouard Cortes “Maxim’s, Rue Royale, Paris”

On Monday, we added a bright and beautiful Paris street scene by Edouard Cortes (1882-1969) to the available inventory.  We are pleased to announce that it quickly found a new home.

The Rue Royale is a short street in Paris that runs between the Place de la Concorde and the Place de la Madeleine. One of the most famous addresses on this street is that of Maxim’s restaurant.

Maxim’s is a renowned restaurant located in the heart of Paris, celebrated for its Art Nouveau decor and storied history. Established in 1893 by Maxime Gaillard, it quickly became a favored haunt of the Parisian elite. The restaurant’s opulent interior, designed by Louis Marnez, features intricate woodwork, stained glass, and an array of mirrors that exude a Belle Époque charm. This aesthetic helped cement Maxim’s reputation as a symbol of luxury and sophistication.

Throughout the 20th century, Maxim’s attracted a glittering array of patrons, including royalty, celebrities, and prominent figures in the arts and fashion. It became synonymous with high society and the glamour of Parisian nightlife. Legendary guests such as Marcel Proust, Jean Cocteau, and Brigitte Bardot frequented the establishment, adding to its allure.

In the 1980s, fashion designer Pierre Cardin acquired Maxim’s, ushering in a new era. Cardin’s vision expanded the brand internationally, opening branches in major cities worldwide and introducing a range of branded products. Despite these modernizations, the Paris location maintained its historic ambiance and continued to serve as a venue for exclusive events and dining experiences.

Maxim’s menu reflects its legacy, offering a blend of classic French cuisine and contemporary culinary innovations. Signature dishes, such as foie gras, escargots, and lobster thermidor, are served with impeccable attention to detail, ensuring an unforgettable dining experience. Today, Maxim’s stands as a testament to Parisian elegance, where history and modernity intersect, making it an enduring icon in the world of fine dining.
