Artists, Don’t Destroy Your Works: Missing part of lost Magritte painting discovered

September 8, 2016

This is a lesson for all you artists out there … see the problems you can cause when you reuse a canvas.  Decades later people spend years looking for the ‘lost’ work!  In this instance, Magritte cut up a painting (The Enchanted Pose) he originally exhibited in 1927 and reused the canvas to create 4 different works.  So far, 3 of the pieces have been found; the most recent (the lower right hand corner) is beneath his painting titled The Human Condition which is part of the Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery’s collection.
