Selfie mishap ruins a 16th century Portuguese sculpture

May 10, 2016

Over the past few years we have posted a number of articles about selfie mishaps and the unfortunate works of art that were damaged as a result.  Well, once again someone selfishly tried to snap a selfie, this time with a 16th century statue outside a station in Portugal .   The 126 year old statue depicts Dom Sebastiao — a young 24-year-old King reigning between 1557 and 1578 (he took the throne at the age of 3) who was killed in battle of Alcacer Quibir.  The work stood between two archway entrances to the Rossio station. Before getting his selfie, the statue fell to the ground and shattered to pieces. The young man attempted to flee the scene; but police apprehended him before he was able to get away.
