Leak Puts Focus On Lost Art Case – Modigliani

April 18, 2016

Amedeo Modigliani’s Homme Assis (Seated Man With a Cane) and the Panama Papers are still a hot topic with the press.  The claim, according to Philippe Maestracci, is that the work was taken by the Nazi’s from his grandfather Oscar Stettiner … a Jewish art dealer.

The painting was purchased by International Art Center SA (which is owned by the Nahmadloot family) at a 1996 Christie’s auction and is now in a warehouse at the Geneva Freeport in Switzerland.  According to this article, Mr. Nahmad will return the work if the plaintiffs can prove in court that Mr. Stettiner owned the painting.
