Does My Family Own a Painting Looted by Nazis?

We read a lot about looted paintings that are returned to their rightful owners.  What about all the paintings whose provenance cannot be verified?  What happens to them?  Here is Eve Kahn’s story, in The New York Times, of one such painting owned by her family.  Eve states: I’ve spent four years researching an artwork that passed through Nazi hands and now hangs in a relative’s home. The more I dig, the more I find murk.
