Using Synthetic DNA to Fight Art Forgery

November 27, 2015

While this is interesting news and a step in the right direction, the only way it will work is if everyone in the art trade adopts it (something I doubt will happen).  And what about the millions of works already in the market?  For those, you still need a real expert (human being) to authenticate them.  And even an expert can make a mistake.  What happens if a work is deemed authentic now, receives its marker and then sometime in the future another expert questions it?

One day some technological gadget will be able to scan, analyze and determine if a work is real.  Right now we still need to reply on the old fashion methods — research, examination and scholarship.
