Jackson Pollock’s forgotten bleak masterpieces – Tate Liverpool

July 8, 2015

This should be a very interesting exhibition of Jackson Pollock in monochrome.  In 1951 Pollock began to explore a middle ground between abstraction and figuration in a series of works painted in black on raw canvas.  He exhibited them at the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York and nothing sold — well, after the show she did sell one to a friend at half price … that was one smart buyer!  I want a time machine!!!

By the early 50s, Pollock began to fall deeper into depression and drinking; ultimately killing himself and a female passenger in 1956 when he crashed his car into a tree at 80 mph.  He was just 44 years old … a great loss.

Jackson Pollock: Blind Spots is at Tate Liverpool until October 18th and then travels to the Dallas Museum of Art from November 15 to March 29, 2016.  To read the full article by William Cook, please click HERE.
