It turns out that a statue of Buddha, which was the centerpiece of an ongoing exhibition at the Hungarian Natural History Museum, may be a stolen 1,100 year old mummy from the Fujian Providence. Inside the statue is believed to be the remains of Zhang Liquan, a monk who was known to heal diseases and promote Buddhist principals from the Yangchun Village. The relic went missing from its temple in 1995 and if China’s investigations prove it to be Liquan, they hope to take back the statue from its current private owner, who bought it legally in 1996 unaware of the mummified monk inside.
