Earliest Johannes Vermeer painting authenticated

June 11, 2014

The panting, Saint Praxedis, has been under scrutiny by authenticators for decades; questioning whether or not the work is in fact an early work (or the earliest work) by 17th century Dutch artist, Johannes Vermeer.  With the help of new technologies, studies were conducted to test the paint pigments against known genuine works by Vermeer.  It was concluded that it was indeed a Vermeer and will be up for auction at Christie’s, London, with an estimate of £8m next month.
