Vandalized Rothko painting back on display at the Tate

May 13, 2014

Back in October 2012, co-founder of the artistic movement “yellowism,” Wlodzimierz Umaniec, vandalized Mark Rothko’s 1958 painting Black on Maroon at the Tate.  Rothko donated the work to the museum in 1970 where it has become one of the collections best-known and most-loved works.  Umaniec defaced the work with graffiti ink writing his name and the following words : 12 a potential piece of yellowism, which landed him two years in jail.  Restorations took over 18 months due to the unusual materials Rothko often used to create his works.
