Netherlands restitutes two works to heir of Holocaust victim

March 17, 2014

Two works believed to be forcefully sold during the Holocaust are now being returned to their rightful heirs.  The Dutch Golden Age paintings, Amsterdam Town Hall by Gerrit Berckheyde and View of a Dutch Harbour with Figures by Adam Willaerts were previously owned by Jewish art collector Sam Bernhard Levie and his wife Sara de Zwarte.  The works were sold in 1940 just before the spouses were deported and killed in the Sobibor concentration camp.
