Pissarro to Van Gogh Boost Sotheby’s $267 Million Auction – here is Bloomberg’s report on last night’s sale. Between the two auction rooms, just their evening sales brought in £340M ($555.8M).
In addition, yesterday’s day sales added another £17.4M ($28.3M) at the end of the sessions (here is an interesting observation: the salerooms are now giving a rolling number for their results. What this means is that if they sell something after a sale has ended they add it to the total. This is why their press release totals, right after the sale, are often different than the numbers you find on the ‘Results’ page of their web site — as of now, the total for the day sales is up to £19.3M.)
Anyway, £357.4M is a pretty strong number (Sotheby’s day sales are today, so the final number will be higher) … and this is just the beginning of the season. Next week the Contemporary sales take place and those should be real interesting.
