A Reporter in France Helps to Return Art Taken by the Nazis

January 30, 2014

It seems like Hollywood has spurred a new trend… The Monuments Men, set to be released on February 7th, is a movie about a WWII platoon who is tasked with rescuing masterpieces from the Nazis. But, in the past few weeks I’ve read multiple stories of individuals wanting to lend a helping hand to the families who had works stolen from them. Amazingly, French museums hold over 2,000 works of unclaimed looted art that has been recovered, but the rightful owners have not been tracked down. The result… 57 French museums get to hang onto some great works, some of them being masterpieces. In over 60 years just 80 works have been returned to the families which the works were originally taken from. In my opinion, it doesn’t seem like the French authorities are trying too hard, but a French reporter has taken it upon herself to do some of the dirty work. She has begun her own research, tracking the potential rightful owners and helping them reclaim what should have been passed down through generations.
