Artworks Disappear Overnight As 5 Pointz Graffiti Haven Is Painted White

November 19, 2013

5Pointz Aerosol Art Center, Inc. located in Long Island City is a well-known outdoor art exhibition space for street artists.  30 years of graffiti art cover the 200,000 square foot building from ground to roof, from artists across the world.

Since new ownership of the “graffiti mecca” has come into effect and permits have been approved the exterior was erased overnight (11/18/13-11/19/13).  With police protection, painters whitewashed the building prepping it for demolition.  Current owners of 5Pointz, Jerry and David Wolkof, are moving forward with their plans to convert this graffiti trove into a $400m development plan building a 1,000 unit apartment complex with 210 affordable housing units.

Understanding the importance of the building, the developers will set aside a large area of the complex devoted exclusively for graffiti artist usage.
