On November 12th, Christie’s Post-War and Contemporary Sale will feature a massive piece by Andy Warhol titled, “Mercedes-Benz W 196 R Grand Prix Car (Streamlined Version, 1954).” The work stands 14 feet tall and depicts the automobile 12 times in various colors. This piece was created for the Daimler Art Collection to mark the centenary of the automobile in 1986, which was just one year before Warhol’s death in 1987, making this work one of his last masterpieces. It is expected to bring in roughly $16 million and the proceeds will be used to secure the Daimler art collection’s long-term future.
