‘Caravaggio’ Miss Means $219 Art May Be Worth $16 Million – here is an interesting case in which the authenticity of an Old Master painting is in dispute. Descendants of the original purchaser sold the painting through Sotheby’s in 2006 for £42,000. The new owner, Denis Mahon, is now claiming that the “After” Caravaggio work is in fact an original and worth £10M.
Once the sellers got wind of this … a lawsuit emerged (which will go to trial next year). I guess the case will rest upon the ability to prove that the work is, in fact, by the Italian master.
