Looted Art From Cypriot Churches Is Returned by Germany

July 16, 2013

For more than a decade, Cyprus has been fighting to have art and artifacts returned after they were discovered back in 1997 in Munich. In all, 173 works were deemed to be taken illegally after the Turkish invasion and were ordered to be returned. The artifacts were found after the passing of Aydin Dikmen, a Turkish-born art dealer who had been illegally trading Byzantine artworks around the world. At the time of the discovery, the collection was valued at $17 million.
