Under the federal law an artist is able to disown their work “in the event of a distortion mutilation, or other modification,” known as the Vara (Visual Artists Rights Act). Recently, Cady Noland, the American painter known for her works revolving around the “American Dream” withdrew her work, Cowboys Milking, 1990, from a Sotheby’s auction due to damages. Marc Jancou, owner of the work plans to appeal the dismissal of the $6m lawsuit.
