Tate Museum Purchases Constable

May 29, 2013

For the past three decades, John Constable’s Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows, 1831, has been located at the National Gallery of Art, in London.  With the current owners (Heirs of Lord Ashton of Hyde) eager to sell the work, the gallery was unable to come up with funds to keep the work of art in their collection.  Set to sell on the open market for £40m, there was a chance that the British masterpiece would be sold to an overseas collection.  Fortunately, with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (£15.8), the Art Fund (£1m), the Manton Foundation and Tate Members, the Tate Museum was able to purchase the work for their spectacular collection, at an offer of £23.1m.  Tate director, Nicholas Serota states, the negotiations were “simple and straightforward” and he is pleased to keep the work secured in the nation.  (The Art Newspaper)
