Portrait of Matilda, Winner of the St. Leger, 1827. Since I am on the topic of racehorses, why not feature a really great one – Matilda. This early 19th century British Sporting painting by one of England’s top artists, David Dalby, was sold by the gallery back in the 1980s. Matilda is portrayed on the Doncaster racecourse after she won the Great St. Leger Stakes of Twenty Five Guineas in 1827.
