The inaugural Art Basel Hong Kong opened to the public today and has drawn huge crowds of collectors and dealers from around the world. Art Basel has taken over ART HK, a local fair which began in 2008 with just 100 galleries. While some have voiced their concern that Art Basel will lose the Asian flavor of ART HK, Art Basel retained Magnus Renfrew, ART HK’s director since inception, who took painstaking measures to ensure that Western and Asian galleries would be equally represented. Art Basel Hong Kong will be open through Sunday, May 26th.
