Convicting Proofs

Oil on panel
9 7/8 x 8 inches

July 12, 1900 to M. Allard

The two Cardinals question who may have fled the palace. While one holds the rope ladder, the other grasps a lady’s slipper and an officer’s epaulette that he found in the snow, each “convicting” proof that an elopement has just occurred.
