Patriots were members of the British Thirteen United Colonies who supported the Continental Congress in the Revolutionary War. Patriots rejected the lack of representation by colonists in the British Parliament and the imposition of British taxes.

Scenes such as this were commonly found in the American frontier, both before and after the Revolutionary War. The single-shot musket, as well as the hatchet strapped to the man’s waist, makes the piece doubtlessly American. This man would have used the tools on his person to hunt, to defend his property, and to be prepared if he were to be called to do his duty in the militia.
