Raising in the East
Charcoal and pastel on paper
7 x 8 inches
Raising in the East displays a pan Asian theme considering gaming. The Mahjong pieces express the gaming theme. Two of the visible pieces have the number eight, the Chinese number of luck. The frog is a Japanese symbol of luck. The bill on the bottom is from Macau, famous for its popular casinos and the coins are from Vietnam.
The drawing is balanced on one side with dreams of endless winnings, yet with the Yin and Yang we are reminded that for every coin gained, one is lost. There is no winning, without loss.
