The Primary Gambit

Oil on panel
7 x 5 inches

A gambit is a chess opening in which a player sacrifices material in the hopes of achieving a resulting advantage. Gambits are often said to be ‘offered’ to and opponent, and that this offer can either be accepted or declined. The Primary Gambit compares this chess scenario with the establishment of a personal relationship. Within the layered collage of collected Ephemera lies some evidence of how a particular relationship may have unfolded. What was offered? Was this offer accepted? What may have been sacrificed? It is up to the viewer to investigate the imagery and uncover an answer for themselves.
