He is credited with creating many icons and frescoes found at several Russian Orthodox churches. However, because these paintings were often collaborative, the <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Trinity<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is the only surviving work by the artist made solely by his hand. Rublev is often named as one of the greatest artists in Russian history. He brought harmony of color and form to the previously stiff, Byzantine-inspired painting traditions of medieval Russia, becoming the model for religious art that followed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Trinity<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> icon was originally intended as <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Hospitality of Abraham<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. This refers to chapter 18 of Genesis, where Abraham offers the protection of his tent to a trio of angels disguised as travelers. However, Rublev removed Abraham and Sarah from the scene, leaving only the angels and transforming them into a representation of the Christian Trinity. The icon was originally kept at the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, a church just outside Moscow considered the spiritual epicenter of the Russian Orthodox Church. It is home to several hundred monks and serves as the official residence of the patriarch of Moscow, who serves as head of the church. The Trinity Lavra\u2019s founder, Saint Sergius of Radonezh, is considered one of Russia\u2019s patron saints. The painting was transferred to the State Tretyakov Gallery in 1929, but was returned to the church in 2022 at the direction of Vladimir Putin\u2019s government. Some art historians and conservators cautioned against this move at the time, warning that the monastery lacks adequate facilities to maintain the ideal environment for the icon\u2019s well-being and for future maintenance and conservation. Moving the icon, however, was likely more political than devotional.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Throughout his leadership of Russia, both as president and prime minister, Putin has enjoyed a close relationship with the Orthodox Church.<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theosthinktank.co.uk\/comment\/2022\/02\/16\/essay-on-vladimir-putin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Writing for the think tank Theos<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Ben Ryan said Putin and the church have an \u201cunusual symbiotic relationship\u201d in which the government permits the church to exercise considerable power. Meanwhile, the church, in return, has provided \u201cthe intellectual and cultural backing for Putin\u2019s Statist vision of Russia\u201d. Returning the most famous work of Russian religious art to its place of origin was likely a move by the Russian government to lend prestige to the church while currying additional favor with its leadership. Patriarch Kirill, the current head of the church and close Putin ally, has even tried to associate the <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Trinity<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> icon with Russia\u2019s ongoing war in Ukraine, saying that the struggles the country faced at the time of its creation can be likened to its contemporary hegemonic endeavors. He stated that it \u201cconnects us to the time when our Russia, in great danger from foreign and domestic enemies, was concentrating on becoming a great power\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As the aforementioned conservators predicted, the capsule in which the Trinity icon has been kept was insufficient to maintain the proper environmental conditions. Tretyakov director Elena Pronicheva said the wood panels on which the icon was painted should be kept at 19\u00baC (about 66\u00baF) with humidity at 50% to 55%. The icon is made of egg tempera on three wood panels glued together. However, the humidity inside the church\u2019s case was found to be around 80%. This has caused significant warping in the panels and deterioration of the glue. Russian art historian Oleg Voskoboinikov posted <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/scontent-lga3-2.xx.fbcdn.net\/v\/t39.99422-6\/808192840_1093083316571606_1971037699408593458_n.png?stp=dst-jpg_tt6&amp;cstp=mx960x1280&amp;ctp=s960x1280&amp;_nc_cat=100&amp;ccb=1-7&amp;_nc_sid=833d8c&amp;_nc_ohc=dkin0aoXvRQQ7kNvwFpmYDv&amp;_nc_oc=AdooEJL0NDP5Z2Gmta77AVdLGhp81cUXwVWYwc_G9uPh5-woBWy0lLIVFINqrg_rhrlhlo9iShSmwf3tDw6iltwz&amp;_nc_zt=14&amp;_nc_ht=scontent-lga3-2.xx&amp;_nc_gid=H0qB_bmphLHTW75bk9YapA&amp;_nc_ss=7b289&amp;oh=00_AQJJknaOOj3s2DVvci19tXmD8JXDU7CyMsAd67FxV_5SrQ&amp;oe=6AB2DF04\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a photo on Facebook<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> on September 13th showing a \u201cscar\u201d in the wood panel that now bisects the face of one of the angels. The icon was removed to the Tretyakov\u2019s restoration labs on September 14th, with a copy placed on display at the church the following day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This news may sour Putin\u2019s image as an ally of the church, since earlier this year the Kremlin moved two other important paintings from museums to churches. According to a statement from the patriarchate, the government moved <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/3\/37\/Virgin_of_Vladimir.jpg?utm_source=en.wikipedia.org&amp;utm_campaign=index&amp;utm_content=original\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Virgin of Vladimir<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/thumb.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/7\/7b\/Feofan_Donskaja.jpg\/960px-Feofan_Donskaja.jpg?utm_source=en.wikipedia.org&amp;utm_campaign=imageinfo&amp;utm_content=thumbnail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Our Lady of the Don<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> from the Tretyakov to the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. Plans also include moving the latter to the Donskoy Monastery later. Both paintings are notably older than Rublev\u2019s <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Trinity<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, with <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Virgin of Vladimir<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> being made in Constantinople in the twelfth century and Our Lady of the Don made in the late fourteenth century. Putin\u2019s government has agreed to lease the icons to the Church for a period of forty-nine years.
