The artist\u2019s great-great-great-great-grandnephew, Arnaud Carayon, acts as the group\u2019s president<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. For many years, he has been vocal about restoring his forebear\u2019s work at the opera, even writing letters to both France\u2019s president, Emmanuel Macron, and the culture minister, Catherine P\u00e9gard. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jules-Eug\u00e8ne Lenepveu was a painter from Angers, a city in western France. After winning the Prix de Rome in 1847, he quickly became one of France\u2019s most sought-after creators of historical and religious paintings. In particular, Lenepveu became known for his frescoes and decorative paintings for churches, theaters, and public buildings, most famously a series for the Panth\u00e9on in Paris <a href=\"https:\/\/thumb.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/7\/72\/Miniature_panth%C3%A9on_lenepveu.jpg\/1280px-Miniature_panth%C3%A9on_lenepveu.jpg?utm_source=fr.wikipedia.org&amp;utm_campaign=imageinfo&amp;utm_content=thumbnail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">showing scenes from the life of Joan of Arc<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">By the 1860s, Emperor Napoleon III commissioned Georges-Eug\u00e8ne Haussmann to begin an urban renovation program to beautify Paris&#8217;s city center. One focal point of these projects was a new opera house designed by Charles Garnier. Having met while studying in Rome, Garnier selected Lenepveu to decorate the theater\u2019s ceiling. He seemed a good fit for the job because he had created the ceiling design for the Le Peletier opera house, the previous home of the main Paris opera company. The resulting work, <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.mediatheque.epmoo.fr\/link\/3c9igq\/zgi1butqulh96ow.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Muses and the Hours of Day and Night<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, took two years to complete and mainly used figures from classical mythology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But as traditional, academic art gave way to modernism, Lenepveu\u2019s star faded. His work remained on the ceiling for nearly a century until 1964. That year, French culture minister Andr\u00e9 Malraux decided that the opera house needed an injection of modernity to make it more approachable and egalitarian. Malraux commissioned the Russian-born artist Marc Chagall to create a new ceiling design<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Chagall created an homage not to mystical forces that provoke creativity, but to the flesh-and-blood people who created the art performed in that auditorium. Chagall\u2019s ceiling features references to operas and ballets by Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and Gluck, as well as composers who would have been unknown in Lenepveu\u2019s time, like Debussy, Stravinsky, and Ravel. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Chagall\u2019s modernist ceiling received less-than-friendly reviews when it was first unveiled. The most common critique was that the incredibly vibrant colors Chagall used proved disruptive or unharmonious with Garnier\u2019s Second Empire-style building. However, <\/span><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">it has remained, inspiring New York\u2019s Metropolitan Opera House <a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2026\/02\/met-opera-considers-selling-chagalls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to later commission Chagall to create work for its<\/a><\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2026\/02\/met-opera-considers-selling-chagalls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0lobby<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/m-le-mag\/article\/2026\/08\/30\/more-than-60-years-after-it-was-redone-the-feud-over-the-paris-opera-s-ceiling-isn-t-over_6756992_117.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Writing for <\/span><\/a><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/m-le-mag\/article\/2026\/08\/30\/more-than-60-years-after-it-was-redone-the-feud-over-the-paris-opera-s-ceiling-isn-t-over_6756992_117.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Le Monde<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Micha\u00ebl Moreau has compared these conversations to similar recent controversies over Notre Dame\u2019s reconstruction and the decision <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2025\/12\/notre-dames-new-stained-glass\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">to include contemporary stained glass<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. One could also compare other famous Paris monuments and buildings with more recent additions, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/external-content.duckduckgo.com\/iu\/?u=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.archinect.net%2Fimages%2F1200x%2Fp0%2Fp0govrbo92ol76px.jpg&amp;f=1&amp;nofb=1&amp;ipt=20685063b37dad04062fb259675fcdb4cbec770e6cba61035fabb5e07b6eda26\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I.M. Pei\u2019s Louvre Pyramid<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/external-content.duckduckgo.com\/iu\/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fi.pinimg.com%2Foriginals%2Fc6%2F4f%2Ff9%2Fc64ff95f78331da08e45441f6fcd95e0.jpg&amp;f=1&amp;nofb=1&amp;ipt=220769f712ec2f83171a7db1f8ceb66afd30d056b93ba6b2e13ad35d8d56ff23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Buren\u2019s columns at the Palais-Royal<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Carayon has previously stated, &#8220;Marc Chagall created a masterpiece, but that does not mean Lenepveu\u2019s work should be rendered invisible.&#8221; Luckily, Chagall painted on canvases glued to a plastic shell. This protects Lenepveu\u2019s original work and makes Chagall&#8217;s paintings easily removable. However, s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">everal options exist for the ceiling\u2019s future beyond just keeping Chagall\u2019s design or restoring Lenepveu\u2019s work. Carayon has suggested sponsoring a rotating ceiling commission, in which a new ceiling by a contemporary artist would be installed every ten years.
