Au Bois de Boulogne<\/em> by Dietz Edzard<\/p><\/div>\n

With summer in full swing, we all need a moment outside to enjoy ourselves. Whether we’re basking in the sun or lounging in the shade, a drink in hand with some good music is everything necessary for a summer afternoon. And the Rehs Galleries booth at the upcoming Newport Show will bring some of that energy, particularly with Dietz Edzard’s vibrant view of a moment of leisure.<\/p>\n

Au Bois de Boulogne<\/span><\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0Dietz Edzard<\/a> shows a young lady in a bright yellow dress enjoying herself at one of the caf\u00e9s in the Bois de Boulogne, one of Paris\u2019s large parks. The Bois de Boulogne is a popular destination for people of all classes and backgrounds. The park\u2019s current borders <\/span>were set<\/span> in 1853 as part of Baron Haussmann\u2019s urban renovation plans. At the time, it featured extensive spaces for walking and lounging, racetracks, caf\u00e9s, and lakes for boating. More recently, it has been home to the Stade Roland Garros, the venue for the French Open tennis tournament. It has also frequently been a subject for many artists, such as <\/span>B\u00e9raud<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Morisot<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Bonnard<\/span><\/a>, and\u00a0<\/span>Van Gogh<\/span><\/a>. Many have also speculated that \u00c9douard Manet used the Bois de Boulogne as the setting for his controversial work\u00a0<\/span>Le D\u00e9jeuner sur l\u2019herbe<\/span><\/a><\/em>, which some theorize\u00a0<\/span>is based<\/span>\u00a0on prostitutes catering to young bourgeois men in the park. But regardless of the interpretation, it\u2019s undeniable that the primary theme of any work of art set in the Bois de Boulogne is leisure and recreation. And Edzard does not deviate from this established norm.<\/span><\/p>\n

Edzard\u2019s subject appears statuesque, yet with an Audrey Hepburn elegance. She is viewed in profile, with a calm, stoic expression as she sips her drink. But while her gloved hand fiddles with her straw, another glass sits upon the table, perhaps implying the existence of a friend or a suitor opposite her. Her placid face makes it seem like she\u2019s attentively following an anecdote or a piece of gossip. But while she remains still, the scene Edzard paints behind her is incredibly dynamic, showing countless couples dancing to the music provided by the small ensemble on the raised platform at the other end of the dance floor. While many painters have depicted caf\u00e9 scenes, we rarely encounter a work set in a Parisian cabaret or caf\u00e9 that is imbued with such intimacy. The action in the background coupled with the woman\u2019s stillness creates a more engaging image for the viewer. The lady in yellow is just one of many attendees, but through Edzard\u2019s framing, she becomes the star attraction.<\/span><\/p>\n
