Place de l\u2019Op\u00e9ra, Caf\u00e9 de la Paix<\/em> by Edouard Cort\u00e8s<\/p><\/div>\n

In the mid-nineteenth century, <\/span>Emperor Napoleon III commissioned Georges-<\/span>Eug\u00e8ne <\/span>Haussmann to undertake an urban renovation program in Paris, beautifying<\/span> the city center and aggrandizing its appearance. Consequently, <\/span>street scenes of the French capital became much more popular among collectors. Another result of this program was that t<\/span>he city\u2019s new opera house, the Palais Garnier, became one of the centerpieces of the \u201cnew\u201d Paris.<\/span><\/p>\n

Architectural historian Christopher <\/span>Mead writes that the Haussmann renovations, including the new opera house, \u201cset the civic stage on which bourgeois Paris could act out its rituals of public display\u201d. <\/span>Edouard Cort\u00e8s<\/a> (1882 – 1969) used the opera house, by then world-famous, as the backdrop of many paintings. <\/span>Meanwhile, the foreground is populated by horse-drawn streetcars, mothers with their children, bakers\u2019 apprentices, and fashionable pedestrians walking in front of the warm, welcoming light coming from the famous Caf\u00e9 de la Paix.<\/span><\/p>\n

Given its proximity to the opera, the caf\u00e9 was frequented by composers, musicians, writers, and artists. Other patrons included the well-off Parisians who would socialize, see these artists, and, of course, be seen themselves. <\/span>In his 1914 travelogue, the American writer Burton Holmes commented that the Caf\u00e9 de la Paix is <\/span>a \u201cfocal point of Parisian existence.\u201d He further wrote that patrons at the caf\u00e9 would \u201crubber\u201d, a euphemism for craning their necks to get a look at whoever walked in and whoever may be passing by the terrasse: \u201c[W]hat would be the use of all the pretty hats and gowns and high-heeled shoes and dainty hosiery if men were not gallant enough to pay attention to the exquisite display?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
