While most of the works were eventually reunited with their owners, many remained unclaimed. The French government was unable to track down the owners of 13,000 looted artworks and artifacts. Many of these were eventually sold off, but about 2,200 were given to French museums so their histories could be further researched. These works are known as the Mus\u00e9es Nationaux R\u00e9cup\u00e9ration, or the National Museums Recovery (MNR). Currently, the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay has about 225 of these works, mainly paintings by the Impressionists and other modern masters like <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.mediatheque.epmoo.fr\/link\/3c9igq\/fux1baqy93xvk3k.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Monet<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.mediatheque.epmoo.fr\/link\/3c9igq\/bod1bvc9uvpif8g.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Boudin<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musee-orsay.fr\/fr\/oeuvres\/jeune-femme-portant-un-enfant-nu-18200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cassatt<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musee-orsay.fr\/en\/artworks\/le-bal-70287\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Degas<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musee-orsay.fr\/en\/artworks\/leglise-saint-jacques-dieppe-1284\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Pissarro<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musee-orsay.fr\/en\/artworks\/ruines-grandcamp-78609\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Seurat<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Recently, the museum has decided to dedicate one of its galleries to displaying some of these works, not only to exhibit them to the public but also to share recent research with a wider audience. The exhibition and the corresponding research were made possible by a \u20ac1 million donation by the American Friends of the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay. The museum has put a total of thirteen works on display in their one-room exhibition called <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00c0 qui appartiennent ces \u0153uvres?<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, or <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To Whom Do These Works Belong?<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. These works include <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.mediatheque.epmoo.fr\/link\/3c9igq\/pac1bxem8sghpts.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">T\u00eate de femme<\/span><\/a> <\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">by Thomas Couture<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.mediatheque.epmoo.fr\/link\/3c9igq\/peg1bx565e28ogw.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Fr\u00e8re et soeur devant la mer \u00e0 Honfleur<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by Alfred Stevens, and <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.mediatheque.epmoo.fr\/link\/3c9igq\/jbq1azj0rq6zfc0.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Eternel printemps<\/span><\/a> <\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">by Auguste Rodin<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. <\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Probably the most well-known work is <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Portrait of Julia Allard<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The subject was a French poet who, along with her husband, the French writer Alphonse Daudet, hosted literary salons in Paris, attended by \u00c9mile Zola and Guy de Maupassant. After Allard died in 1940, the portrait somehow found its way into the possession of Renou &amp; Colle, an art dealer in the city\u2019s 8th arrondissement, which sold it to the Cologne Museum. By 1950, the portrait was transported back to France and placed in the care of the Louvre. It was only in 1986 that it was transferred to the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay hopes that this will lead to further discoveries and even further restitutions of these works. According to David Zivie, director of the culture ministry department responsible for researching and returning properties looted during the Holocaust, there are about thirty works in the MNR catalogue in French museums with active restitution cases that he is confident will result in their return to the rightful heirs.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay in Paris will dedicate a gallery to exhibiting works of art looted during the Second World War.
