While he received his artistic training in the workshop of the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio, Michelangelo famously disliked painting. This is why so few of Michelangelo\u2019s paintings exist. Apart from frescoes he did at the Vatican, only two paintings are confirmed to have been created by the master: <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/e\/e3\/Entombment_Michelangelo.jpg\/960px-Entombment_Michelangelo.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Entombment<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> at London\u2019s National Gallery and <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/e\/e1\/Tondo_Doni%2C_por_Miguel_%C3%81ngel.jpg\/960px-Tondo_Doni%2C_por_Miguel_%C3%81ngel.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the Doni Tondo<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> at the Uffizi, both created while the artist was in his late twenties and early thirties. Another two paintings, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/0\/01\/MICHELANGELO_-_Manchester_Madonna_adjusted.JPG\/960px-MICHELANGELO_-_Manchester_Madonna_adjusted.JPG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the Manchester Madonna<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/b\/b1\/Michelangelo_Buonarroti_-_The_Torment_of_Saint_Anthony_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg\/960px-Michelangelo_Buonarroti_-_The_Torment_of_Saint_Anthony_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Torment of Saint Anthony<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, are often attributed to Michelangelo, but there is no scholarly consensus on their authorship. One art historian, however, now claims he has found another painting potentially by Michelangelo, which would be an incredible discovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Belgian scholar Michel Draguet, a professor at the Universit\u00e9 Libre de Bruxelles and former director of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts, has now asserted the authenticity of a painting he calls the <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Piet\u00e0 Spirituali<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. A piet\u00e0 is a work of religious art showing the Virgin Mary cradling the lifeless body of Jesus following his crucifixion. The most famous version of a piet\u00e0 <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walksinrome.com\/uploads\/2\/5\/1\/0\/25107996\/editor\/pieta-by-michelangelo-st-peter-s-basilica-rome_4.jpg?1636899791\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is a sculpture that Michelangelo created<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> when he was around 24 years old.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Piet\u00e0 Spirituali<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> originally appeared at the Genoa auction house Wannenes in 2020. Despite the modest high estimate of \u20ac3,000, it eventually sold for \u20ac87,600 w\/p. The auction house did not attribute the painting to any artist, only describing it as the work of a sixteenth- or seventeenth-century painter. The catalogue authors wrote that the painting appears to draw heavily on \u201cTuscan-Roman influences,\u201d including the works of Andrea del Sarto, Pontormo, Francesco Salviati, and Michelangelo. They further wrote that the work also appears inspired by late Mannerist artists like Federico Zuccari and Jacopino del Conte.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In his report, Draguet wrote that several parts of the painting indicate Michelangelo\u2019s technique. He claims that the figures bear anatomical similarities to several of Michelangelo\u2019s graphic works, like <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/courtauld.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/D.1978.PG_.424-e1618579391892.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Il Sogno<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/opinion-images.wsj.net\/im-44706500?width=1280&amp;size=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bacchanal of Children<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. He also claims that at the bottom of the canvas <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/wmimages.bruzz.be\/styles\/58cb2aa58cd086c36907f8b6abb784cba47665d0\/2026-03\/3d82d77f-pieta-spirituali.jpg?style=W3sicmVzaXplIjp7ImZpdCI6Imluc2lkZSIsIndpZHRoIjo2NTAsImhlaWdodCI6bnVsbCwid2l0aG91dEVubGFyZ2VtZW50Ijp0cnVlfX0seyJqcGVnIjp7InF1YWxpdHkiOjk1fX1d&amp;sign=df17a28c248293f3af4f2d1a5134c0374772677f322f567b3c04cdc990e1c87a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is a symbol<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> that resembles <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/e\/ec\/Michelangelo_Buonarroti_-_1475-1564_02_Signature.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a monogram Michelangelo sometimes used in letters<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Additional chemical tests performed at Belgium\u2019s Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage confirmed that the materials used date to 1520 to 1580, which slightly overlaps with Michelangelo\u2019s lifespan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Draguet also points to documentary evidence of the painting\u2019s existence in Viterbo in the 1540s. Letters refer to a piet\u00e0 painting by Michelangelo owned by the English cardinal Reginald Pole. This is where Draguet came up with the painting\u2019s title. The Spirituali were a Catholic movement in sixteenth-century Italy that sought to bridge some of the gaps between the Church and the protestant sects that had emerged in recent decades. Cardinal Pole was associated with the Spirituali, as was Michelangelo\u2019s close friend, the poet Vittoria Colonna.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Some have criticized Draguet for <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">perhaps<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> jumping the gun <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a little<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> First of all, he is not a specialist in Renaissance art. His area of study, rather, is the work of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Belgian surrealists and symbolists, namely Ren\u00e9 Magritte and Fernand Khnopff. Others say that the presence of the monogram may be evidence contradicting the claim that Michelangelo created the painting. Michelangelo never signed any of his works, except for his piet\u00e0 sculpture at the Vatican. In covering the story, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lefigaro.fr\/arts-expositions\/une-nouvelle-pieta-de-michel-ange-miracle-ou-illusion-20260305\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the French newspaper <\/span><\/a><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lefigaro.fr\/arts-expositions\/une-nouvelle-pieta-de-michel-ange-miracle-ou-illusion-20260305\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Le Figaro<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> spoke with a French art historian specializing in the Renaissance, who said the painting appears to be a genuine sixteenth-century work. Still, they have doubts about Draguet\u2019s authorship claims. \u201cI don\u2019t believe in Michelangelo\u2019s monograms. The majority of great Italian artists rarely signed their works. This signature is rather detrimental to the painting\u201d. The British art historian and Renaissance specialist David Ekserdjian also commented that stylistically, the painting does not match anything that Michelangelo did. He also asked why, if this was a painting by Michelangelo, hadn\u2019t anyone mentioned it until now? Ekserdjian and others have noted that Michelangelo was, among Renaissance artists, \u201cincomparably, the most documented in terms of artistic biography\u201d. Two of his contemporaries, Giorgio Vasari and Ascanio Condivi, wrote separate biographies on him. If Michelangelo had created this painting, surely one or both of them would have mentioned it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">L<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">e Figaro<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> also claimed that the paintings\u2019 two owners may be trying to replicate the success of Salvator Mundi, a rediscovered painting purportedly by Leonardo that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/11\/15\/arts\/design\/leonardo-da-vinci-salvator-mundi-christies-auction.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sold at Christie\u2019s in 2017 for $450 million<\/a>.
