The evening featured fifty-three lots, mainly showcasing late nineteenth- and twentieth-century European and North American painting and sculpture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Of course, the expected star of the show was Francis Bacon\u2019s 1972 self-portrait. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> was one of nine self-portraits Bacon created that year, and marks the early years of the artist\u2019s morose, introspective turn following the death of his partner George Dyer. According to Martin Harrison, the editor of Bacon\u2019s catalogue raisonn\u00e9, this self-portrait shows a strong influence from <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/images.fineartamerica.com\/images-medium-large\/1-two-dancers-edgar-degas.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the pastels of Edgar Degas<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, as seen in the blue and pink shades accenting the artist\u2019s face. But despite these brighter colors, the composition hints at Bacon\u2019s fixation with death and decay. Sotheby\u2019s specialists write that the self-portrait gives us \u201ca face in the act of becoming undone, yet held, paradoxically by an intelligence of paint so controlled that the very brutality becomes a kind of order.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The painting has had only two owners since the artist gave it away in 1983. The collector who consigned it to Sotheby\u2019s had previously bought it at that same location in 1994, where it sold for \u00a3364.5K w\/p. With the market for Bacon\u2019s work becoming far more robust in the last thirty years, it wasn\u2019t terribly surprising that Sotheby\u2019s specialists gave the Bacon self-portrait an estimate range of \u00a38 million to \u00a312 million. Bidders on Wednesday fought over the painting, driving the final hammer price beyond the high estimate, landing at \u00a313.5 million (or \u00a316.04 million \/ $21.4 million w\/p).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_57389\" style=\"width: 264px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/SothebysFontana-scaled.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57389\" class=\"wp-image-57389\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/SothebysFontana-280x300.jpg\" alt=\"A black-and-green painted canvas poked with holes.\" width=\"254\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/SothebysFontana-280x300.jpg 280w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/SothebysFontana-956x1024.jpg 956w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/SothebysFontana-768x823.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/SothebysFontana-1434x1536.jpg 1434w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/SothebysFontana-1912x2048.jpg 1912w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 254px) 100vw, 254px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-57389\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Concetto spaziale<\/em> by Lucio Fontana<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Along with the Bacon self-portrait, <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Concetto spaziale<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by Lucio Fontana was the only other work in the sale with a high estimate above \u00a310 million. Created in 1960, the work is an example of Fontana\u2019s experimentations with altering the canvas itself as a form of artistic expression. <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/d7hftxdivxxvm.cloudfront.net\/?height=800&amp;quality=80&amp;resize_to=fit&amp;src=https%3A%2F%2Fd32dm0rphc51dk.cloudfront.net%2FU4FqOOcVHXhIzw6hgJBVRQ%2Fnormalized.jpg&amp;width=660\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A canvas painted a single <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">color<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> disrupted by <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">slashes<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is probably the most recognizable way Fontana chose to mess with the support.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> However, here, he has created a series of holes highlighted by oil paint applied in a thick impasto. While the linear slash was a much more recent development in Fontana\u2019s work, punching holes in the canvas was something he had been doing since 1948. Both the slash and the holes, however, are part of the same experimentation with artistic media. As Fontana said, \u201cI have not attempted to decorate a surface, but on the contrary; I have tried to break its dimensional limitations.\u201d <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Concetto spaziale,<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> however, fell just short of its \u00a38.5 million low estimate, selling for \u00a38.1 million (or \u00a39.8 million \/ $13.1 million w\/p).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">And finally, it wouldn\u2019t quite be a modern art sale without a major Impressionist. Claude Monet created <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Maison de jardinier<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in 1884 during a trip to Bordighera, a small town on the Mediterranean coast in Liguria in northern Italy. He had planned to stay for three weeks, but ended up staying for three months. In a letter to his wife, Alice, Monet said he found it very difficult to capture the lush, varied vegetation surrounding the town, including wildflowers, citrus trees, and palms. The painting offered at Sotheby\u2019s features houses among a grove of orange and lemon trees. The painting\u2019s first owner was Monet\u2019s friend and artistic contemporary John Singer Sargent, who wrote to Monet when he first acquired it, receiving it in exchange for an Alexandre Falgui\u00e8re painting. The painting last crossed the block in 2007, where it sold at Sotheby\u2019s for \u00a34.05 million w\/p. It was created in 1969 as part of a series Kossoff executed between 1969 and 1972. The subject is a public swimming pool in the northwest London neighborhood of Willesden. With a high estimate of \u00a3800K, the Kossoff achieved more than five times what Sotheby\u2019s specialists expected. With a hammer price of \u00a34.2 million (or \u00a35.2 million \/ $6.9 million w\/p), <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Children\u2019s Swimming pool<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> set the new auction record for the artist, blowing away the previous titleholder, <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.artnet.com\/WebServices\/images\/ll00025lldj3VJFgPNECfDrCWvaHBOcuneF\/leon-kossoff-willesden-junction---autumn-afternoon.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Willesden Junction &#8211; Autumn Afternoon<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, which sold at Christie\u2019s in 2018 for \u00a31.38 million w\/p.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In some regards, the evening sale did rather well. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">eighteen<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> of the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">fifty-three<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> available lots selling within their estimates, Sotheby\u2019s specialists <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">walked away with<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a 34% accuracy rate.<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With another <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">twenty-two<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> lots (42%) selling below and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">eleven<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> lots (21%) above, the sale <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">overall<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> achieved a 96% sell-through rate.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Against a total pre-sale minimum estimate of \u00a397.15 million, the available lots brought in \u00a3102.5 million, or \u00a3130.9 million \/ $174.9 million w\/p.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Wednesday, March 4th, Sotheby\u2019s kicked off a series of modern art sales at their location in London with their Modern &amp; Contemporary Art evening auction.
