She had previously offered her resignation to the president in the immediate aftermath of <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2025\/10\/heist-at-the-louvre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the October 2025 crown jewels heist<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, but Macron refused to accept it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Prior to her taking the helm of the world\u2019s most-visited museum, des Cars previously served as director of the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay and the Mus\u00e9e de l\u2019Orangerie, both in Paris. She was appointed to the position in 2021, making her the first female director of the Louvre. Despite some successes, such as <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/artists\/louvre-jacques-louis-david-museum-retrospective-1234755977\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the Jacques-Louis David retrospective<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/news\/marlene-dumas-first-contemporary-woman-artist-acquired-louvre-permanent-collection-1234760592\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the increased acquisition of modern and contemporary artworks<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, some predict that des Cars\u2019s time as director will likely be characterized by institutional failures that expose the museum\u2019s infrastructural and security issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As part of President Macron\u2018s cultural agenda, des Cars signed off on <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2025\/02\/coming-soon-a-brand-new-louvre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a major renovation project<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> called the Nouvelle Renaissance. Notably, the plan included a new museum entrance by the River Seine and a 33,000-square-foot wing dedicated to the Mona Lisa, which would ease visitor traffic in the other galleries. The need for infrastructural improvements was driven home by several instances over the past year <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2025\/05\/leaky-louvre-roof-nearly-damages-paintings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">in which rainwater leaked into museum galleries, libraries, and archives<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Museum staff <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/france\/20260119-louvre-closes-for-the-day-due-to-staff-strike\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">have gone on strike several times during des Cars\u2019s directorship<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, partially to call attention to the need for improvements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">And of course, one of the top art-world moments of 2025 was the October heist that saw the theft of some of France\u2019s crown jewels, valued at \u20ac88 million. The investigation is ongoing, but several arrests have been made. The stolen jewels have not been recovered, but the crown of Empress Eug\u00e9nie will soon be restored <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/cvCMoJAxBJV55v-L-t8sdyqUL5w=\/1026x684\/filters:no_upscale():focal(959x648:960x649)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/5e\/21\/5e21caf3-34a5-4fe1-96b4-9dd8bd092703\/3b_couronne_de_haut_de_tete_de_limperatrice_eugenie_deformee_lors_du_vol_dans_la_galerie.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">after being damaged in the incident<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The most recent scandal to rock the Louvre occurred only this month. Paris police have arrested nine people for <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/france-louvre-ticket-fraud-cc68ec63f4c4e2703215637f8c23da6f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">allegedly conspiring to defraud the museum<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> through several methods. These conspirators, mainly tour guides, were found to have reused tickets, split tour groups to avoid extra fees, and bribed museum employees. Using these methods for close to ten years, authorities allege that the suspects cost the Louvre \u20ac10 million. When questioned, some officials, like the museum\u2019s administrator general, Kim Pham, said that some fraud is inevitable for a museum as large as the Louvre. However, the museum administration has stated it will revise its ticket validation policies to prevent this fraud from happening again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In a statement, des Cars wrote that being director of the Louvre was \u201cthe honor of my professional life.\u201d President Macron has since announced his candidate to replace des Cars, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artforum.com\/news\/christophe-leribault-named-director-of-the-louvre-1234744397\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the director of the Palace of Versailles, Christophe Leribault<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After five years on the job, Laurence des Cars has resigned as director of the Louvre.
