Although his works were initially attributed solely to him, they were nearly always co-created with his wife, Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon. Even after credit for these installations was given to both artists, some publications still excluded Jeanne-Claude\u2019s name. Regardless of what the public knew, their first well-known installation was <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Pont Neuf Wrapped<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in 1985.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pariseater.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/pont-neuf-paris-1920x1024.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Pont Neuf<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is one of Paris&#8217;s bridges that cross the Seine, spanning the western tip of the \u00cele de la Cit\u00e9. Despite the name, which means \u2018new bridge,\u2019 it is actually the city\u2019s oldest bridge. Christo &amp; Jeanne-Claude had been fixated on wrapping as a transformative process that makes viewers see the subject anew, from <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/media.mutualart.com\/Images\/\/2019_11\/14\/11\/114530284\/2663b186-163a-432d-961a-a2e5eb1d6d66.Jpeg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a simple chair<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2021\/09\/thats-a-wrap-christos-last-work-at-the-arc-de-triomphe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the Arc de Triomphe<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. The Pont Neuf was their first monumental wrapping project, conceived in 1975. It took years of planning and city approval, but the duo wrapped the bridge, keeping it wrapped for two weeks and attracting three million visitors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Christo\u2019s nephew, Vladimir Javacheff, who serves as director of the Christo &amp; Jeanne-Claude Foundation, stated that an installation commemorating the Pont Neuf Wrapped has been in the planning stages since 2015. The artist JR seemed like a good choice to help design this commemoration. For nearly 20 years, he has been creating large public installations using his photographs as source material. The works address a range of issues, from <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/app\/news-upload\/2018\/06\/jr_horizontal_w1200xh630__173038-1024x604.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">immigration<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to income inequality. But he almost always focuses on individuals and identity in his work, turning his photographs into enormous representations of people. He <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/s.telegraph.co.uk\/graphics\/projects\/street-artist-JR\/media\/jr-main-portrait-landscape-mr.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">laid them out on New York City streets<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and turned the houses of a Brazilian favela <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/s.telegraph.co.uk\/graphics\/projects\/street-artist-JR\/media\/jr-hillside-mr.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">into eyes looking back across the city<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. However, out of all the things he\u2019s accomplished, JR has called <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Pont Neuf Cavern<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> \u201c100% the most challenging thing I\u2019ve ever done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The concept drawings JR has prepared show not a strict recreation of <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Pont Neuf Wrapped<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, but more of a reimagination. The current plan is to wrap the bridge, but in a very different way from how Christo and Jeanne-Claude did. Rather than\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">covering the bridge with large tarps secured with rope, JR plans to build a structure around it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/app\/news-upload\/2025\/12\/pont-neuf-JR-1024x637.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to create the appearance of<\/a><\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/app\/news-upload\/2025\/12\/pont-neuf-JR-1024x637.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0a mountainous ridge<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Pedestrians and vehicles crossing will travel through the installation, which will be designed to appear like a large grotto or cave from the inside. The reinterpretation of the original work not only pays homage to Christo &amp; Jeanne-Claude but to the structure\u2019s history. The Pont Neuf was the first stone bridge in Paris, made from limestone quarried north of the city. <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Pont Neuf Cavern<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> takes the bridge back to the stone from which it was carved over four centuries ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">JR\u2019s team planned on carrying out the project this year for the fortieth anniversary of <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Pont Neuf Wrapped<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.
