However, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/nowmedia.co\/posts\/christies-shutters-digital-art-department\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">she recently told <\/span><\/a><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/nowmedia.co\/posts\/christies-shutters-digital-art-department\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Now Media<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> that she and the auction house have parted ways, and that they have closed their digital art department. When asked for a comment, a spokesperson for Christie\u2019s said that this was \u201ca strategic decision to reformat digital art sales.\u201d Instead of having their own department, digital works of art will instead be dealt with through the twentieth and twenty-first century divisions. Now that the digital department is shuttered, there is the issue of Christie\u2019s 3.0, the auction house\u2019s platform for buying and selling NFTs and other works backed by blockchain technology. Christie\u2019s plans to keep the service up and running are currently unknown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The art world establishment has had an interesting love affair with new forms of digital art ever since 2021, with the rise of the NFT as an artistic medium. It was at Christie\u2019s that the first major NFT sale took place, when the <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Everydays <\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">series by Beeple <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-56362174\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">sold for $69.3 million<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Over the course of 2021 and into 2022, NFTs and other forms of digital art made prominent appearances at major auction houses and galleries. This sparked widespread speculation, both enthusiastic and fearful, that this foray into the mainstream art world would legitimize a very new art form that many were hesitant to approach. However, the market has changed. By the end of 2022, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theblock.co\/post\/196568\/auction-house-christies-nft-sales-fell-96-in-2022?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">NFT sales at Christie\u2019s had dropped 96%<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. The full scale of <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2021\/12\/nfts-newest-scammers-tool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">how NFTs are used for nefarious purposes<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> became common knowledge. Digital art platforms like Async Art, KnownOrigin, and LG Art Lab have all since closed. Eventually, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2023\/08\/nft-lawsuit-names-sothebys-as-defendant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">some blamed major auction houses like Sotheby\u2019s for inflating the bubble<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, using their reputations to hype up the technology and drive up prices. Perhaps auction houses like Christie\u2019s were somewhat hasty in establishing separate departments for digital art, given the considerable uncertainty in the market for these works.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s understandable why there hasn\u2019t been much fanfare over the decision to close down the digital department. Christie\u2019s would rather quietly sweep under the rug the fact that they and many others fell for a bubble. It\u2019s embarrassing, yes, but like the tulips of centuries ago or the Internet companies of living memory, there\u2019s always something everyone thinks is going to be the next big thing. And it doesn\u2019t always pan out the way we think. But now, there\u2019s a different item on the market we\u2019re going to have to deal with. Art generated by artificial intelligence <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2025\/03\/ai-art-the-new-nfts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">has replaced NFTs as the art of the future<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in some people\u2019s minds.
