The square where the arch sits, the Place de l&#8217;\u00c9toile (now the Place Charles de Gaulle), is the convergence of twelve different avenues, including the Avenue de Friedland, the Avenue Foch, and the Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es. So, of course, there was no shortage of viewpoints for Cort\u00e9s to use in his work featuring the Arc de Triomphe. While\u00a0a street scene of the Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es\u00a0was a common subject in Cort\u00e9s&#8217;s works,\u00a0the inclusion of a Paris M\u00e9tro entrance\u00a0was a rare and intriguing addition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Paris M\u00e9tro system first opened in 1900, with each station marked by distinctive Art Nouveau entrances, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/parisdesignagenda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Design-Icon-The-Best-Paris-Metro-Entrances-5.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">many of which still stand<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. The M\u00e9tro station in the Cort\u00e9s is the George V stop, located on the Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es right in front of Louis Vuitton\u2019s flagship location between Avenue George V and Rue de Bassano. The stop was previously called the Alma station, named after the Avenue d\u2019Alma, which was renamed Avenue George V in 1918 in honor of the British monarch, the current king\u2019s great-grandfather. This was a way to honor the alliance between Britain and France during the First World War. Nowadays, the stop is marked by a simpler, classical-style entrance, yet the Cort\u00e9s painting shows the older, cast-iron gates flanked by a pair of red lamps. The painting, created around 1949, shows us Paris only five years following the liberation from the German occupation. Despite the war\u2019s devastation, the city seems vibrant, with the sun\u2019s light starting to fade in the west as the sky flashes pink through the Arc de Triomphe. While some of the artist\u2019s work includes some of the city\u2019s last horse-drawn streetcars, the Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es is entirely populated by new automobiles now.
