The Bois de Boulogne is a popular destination for people of all classes and backgrounds. The park\u2019s current borders <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">were set<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in 1853 as part of Baron Haussmann\u2019s urban renovation plans. At the time, it featured extensive spaces for walking and lounging, racetracks, caf\u00e9s, lakes for boating, and, more recently, it is the home of the Stade Roland Garros, the venue for the French Open tennis tournament. It has also frequently become a subject for many artists like <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/3\/34\/%27Bois_de_Boulogne%27_by_Jean_B%C3%A9raud.jpg?20160521004954\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">B\u00e9raud<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.artchive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/In-the-Bois-de-Boulogne-Berthe-Morisot-1879-.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Morisot<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/api.nga.gov\/iiif\/8c5a2781-b0a2-47b4-953b-e568ca1c7999__900\/full\/!800,800\/0\/default.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bonnard<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/e\/e4\/Walker_in_Bois_de_Boulogne_%28Autumn_1886%29.jpg\/986px-Walker_in_Bois_de_Boulogne_%28Autumn_1886%29.jpg?20191109043856\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Van Gogh<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Many have also speculated that \u00c9douard Manet used the Bois de Boulogne as the setting for his controversial work <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.britannica.com\/90\/241690-050-30181014\/Le-Dejeuner-sur-l-Herbe-Edouard-Manet-1863.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Le D\u00e9jeuner sur l\u2019herbe<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, which some theorize <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is based<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> on prostitutes catering to young bourgeois men in the park. But regardless of the interpretation, it\u2019s undeniable that the primary theme of any work of art set in the Bois de Boulogne is leisure and recreation. And Edzard does not deviate from this established norm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Edzard\u2019s subject appears statuesque but with an Audrey Hepburn elegance. She is viewed in profile, with a calm, stoic expression, as she sips her drink. But while her gloved hand fiddles with her straw, another glass sits upon the table, perhaps implying the existence of a friend or a suitor opposite her. Her placid face makes it seem like she\u2019s attentively following an anecdote or a piece of gossip. But while she remains still, the scene Edzard paints behind her is incredibly dynamic, showing countless couples dancing to the music provided by the small ensemble on the raised platform at the other end of the dance floor. While many painters have depicted caf\u00e9 scenes, very rarely do we encounter a work set in a Parisian cabaret or caf\u00e9 that is imbued with such intimacy. The action in the background coupled with the woman&#8217;s stillness creates a more engaging image for the viewer.
