Normally, I would not pay any attention to this sort of auction. The paintings are nice enough, but I was very interested in what became the top lot. Among the post-impressionist landscapes and bronze sculptures, there was <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Man Putting on His Shirt<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by John Koch. The artist may not be the most well-known of the early twentieth-century American realists, yet his urban interiors and other looks at mid-century life have caught the attention of certain collectors. The three paintings by the artists available at Sotheby\u2019s on Wednesday, however, are rather different. All of them are rather intimate, showing men in various phases of undress, ranging from workers resting shirtless in a field to a man in a bathing suit playing with a child. <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Man Putting on His Shirt<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is probably the most intimate of the three. The painting is somewhat erotically charged, with the subject\u2019s raised arms framing his exposed torso. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is not unusual for some of Koch\u2019s paintings, which led some of his contemporaries to question his sexuality. Sources conflict on this matter, with some claiming that the artist was indeed gay but closeted, while others say that he was happily married to his wife Dora for nearly fifty years. Regardless, the last time <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Man Putting on His Shirt<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> sold at auction was back in 1996, when it sold at Christie\u2019s for $17.8K w\/p. Sotheby\u2019s specialists did not expect the painting to do much better than that, assigning it an estimate range of $8K to $12K. From the moment the lot opened, the Koch received considerable attention. By the time the clock ran out, the hammer price had skyrocketed, surpassing the high estimate by a factor of 25. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Koch eventually sold for $<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">300K<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> (or $<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">381K w\/p<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">).<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> makes the painting the third most expensive work by the artist to ever sell at auction.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_56821\" style=\"width: 277px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-1-scaled.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56821\" class=\"wp-image-56821\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-1-300x243.jpg\" alt=\"A landscape painting of a lake with trees in the background.\" width=\"267\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-1-300x243.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-1-1024x829.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-1-768x621.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-1-1536x1243.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-1-2048x1657.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-56821\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Blue Lake<\/em> by Sergei Vinogradov<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Behind the Koch was a landscape by the Soviet painter Sergei Vinogradov. <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Blue Lake<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> shows exactly that: bright blue water, only interrupted by tall grasses and water lilies, stretching to the opposite tree-lined shore. Vinogradov was a Russian impressionist painter who was also associated with a group known as the Peredvizhniki, or the Wanderers. These were Russian realist painters who actively opposed the conservatism of the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. These painters often focused on landscapes and scenes of everyday life. <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Blue Lake<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> also proved incredibly popular with Sotheby\u2019s buyers, selling far beyond its $30K maximum estimate. It eventually sold for $140K (or $177.8<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">K <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">w\/p), or more than four-and-a-half times the high estimate. And finally, a bit of sculpture came in third place with Auguste Rodin\u2019s <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mouvement de danse, \u00e9tude type A, agrandissement<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The work is part of a series of sculptures Rodin executed in the last decade of his life, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">showing<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> dancers in various poses, achieving the difficult task of making a static object appear fluid and dynamic.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Rodin created the design for this particular sculpture around 1911. However, Rodin\u2019s estate would not have it cast until 1958 as one of ten copies. While the other top lots sold exponentially beyond their high estimates, the Rodin sold for a more reasonable price by comparison. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sotheby\u2019s expected the Rodin to sell for between $<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">60K<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and $<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">80K<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, with several interested bidders raising the final price to $<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">130K<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> (or $<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">165.1<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">K <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">w\/p<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">) before the online timer ran out.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_56822\" style=\"width: 228px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56822\" class=\"wp-image-56822\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-2-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"A bronze sculpture of a dancer.\" width=\"218\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-2-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-2.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-56822\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Mouvement de danse, \u00e9tude type A, agrandissement<\/em> by Auguste Rodin<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There were a handful of other lots that sold for more than twice their high estimates, including one of the other Koch paintings, <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/001092f\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/4137x3306+0+0\/resize\/1024x818!\/quality\/90\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsothebys-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fmedia-desk%2F91%2F12%2Ff67ea2ce441ab9ba682573bdd1f3%2Fkochfarmersnooning.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Farmers Nooning<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, which sold for $28K against a $10K high estimate. The sale overall did exceptionally well. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Of the ninety-five total lots, thirty sold within their <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">estimates<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, giving Sotheby\u2019s a <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">32<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">% accuracy rate.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Twenty-six lots (27%) each sold above and below their respective estimates. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> left thirteen lots unsold, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">giving Sotheby\u2019s an 86<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">% sell-through rate.<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Against the $1.2 million total low estimate, the auction achieved a total hammer of $1.76 million (or $2.24 million <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">w\/p<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">).
